On Dr. Maurice Preter

Maurice Preter, MD is Board certified in two specialties: neurology and psychiatry. He divides his professional time between patient care, forensic medical/neuropsychiatric consulting, research in neuropsychiatry, and teaching. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry on the faculty of Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons.

Dr. Preter received his training in both Neurology and Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (where he also had extensive psychotherapy and family therapy training), and his medical education at the University of Munich, the University of Paris, France, and at Harvard Medical School.

His main interest lies in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that overlap between psychiatry, neurology, and general medicine: e.g. epilepsy with co-morbid mood disorders, the differential diagnosis of non-epileptic seizures, Parkinson disease with depression or dementia, psychosomatic disorders.

Integrating European and American medical approaches, he practices psychiatry using an individualized combination of psychopharmacological and alternative/complimentary medications, and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy, with a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of depression and bipolar disorder (manic depression), panic disorder, psychological trauma, grief reactions after loss, and personality disorders.

Dr. Preter has buprenorphine certification to practice medication-assisted opioid addiction therapy with Subutex® (buprenorphine hydrochloride) and Suboxone® tablets (buprenorphine hydrochloride and naloxone hydrochloride). This medication treatment can be enhanced with individual psychotherapy.

In neurology, the practice focuses on difficult to treat migraine, headaches, and other chronic pain syndromes.

Integrative, multi-specialty diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), one of the most underdiagnosed, and most treatable conditions in neuropsychiatric medicine.

Key is the individualized, holistic, neuroscientifically based assessment of the patient, and the use of treatments drawing on pharmacological, alternative/complimentary, and adjuvant modalities.

Dr. Preter is a member of the Task Force on Pain Management, and the Task Force on Anxiety Disorders and OCD, of the World Federation of Societies of Biological Psychiatry.

Dr. Preter teaches professional audiences nationally and internationally (frequently using the medium of full-length movie features) and has appeared on educational television and radio programs on several neuropsychiatric subjects, among them psychological trauma, dementia, depression of old age, and the safe use of neuropsychopharmacologic medication.

Dr. Preter, a recipient of the Fellowship awards of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, is a member of Independent Doctors of New York (IDNY), a group of Manhattan physicians who practice medicine independent of corporate “managed care”.
